Where are they now – Liz Jung

By December 18, 2015#TCFAV, Where are they now

Korean born and LA bred, colorist, Liz Jung found her calling at a very early age.

Perming, cutting and coloring her Moms mane and being the “go to” girl in high school, for one to have their hair perfected for Prom and Homecoming, was a talent Jung naturally immersed herself in.

Upon completing high school, this young woman’s first wish was to take off one uniform and don another, that of a colorists apron and gloves. However, her path took a slight “conventional” turn and Jung found herself majoring in economics at UCSD, but luckily the heart wants what the heart wants and her path of an artist overrode this initial flirtation and her passion for hair and an eagle eye for color and creativity won in the end. Liz Jung learnt the tools of the beauty trade with some of the brightest names in the hair arena and so she continued to pursue her childhood, professional dream.

Growing up in Culver City, Jung didn’t need to travel far to get a pulse on the “who’s who” of the best salons in near by Beverly Hills. Liz says, as naturally and calmly as she applies color, “I answered an ad on Craigslist to assist a colorist, Tyle Mahoney – who was on my radar – and he was working at the Neil George Salon. I jumped at the chance and the next day went to meet with Mahoney. My mentor, now Employer and person I call my best friend, Tracey Cunningham, just happened to be at the salon at the same time  – by default we talked and really meshed and the next day, as fate would happen, I was assisting her!”

With Jung’s raw abilities, eagerness and ambition, she quickly became lead assistant within Cunningham’s team and whilst “meshing” with her boss so well, Liz joined Tracey when she opened “Meche” salon, with business partner Neil Weisberg, in 2012.

With Jung’s childhood dream now a crystal clear reality, compounding the exposure that comes with working for one of the premiere salons in the country and after her three year tenure under the tuition of Cunningham, traveling the globe from Barcelona to Dubai as her assistant, getting of a 13 hour flight and doing 45 clients in a day lends to her tried and tested professionalism and artistry. She now hones her skills as colorist on the floor at Meche Salon.

“I was so fortunate to learn from Tracey, it was hard work and it was an honor.

I love that I can look at certain hair colors and recreate, put my own twist on it and customize a look for my clients that’s suitable for them.” Jung adds,”My greatest pleasure and niche, what makes me stand apart, is my ability of turning orange heads of hair to creamy, ashy blondes.”

With her client list growing from strength to strength, her thirst for knowledge and consistently upping her game, Jung admits – with her infectious giggle, “My dream clients would be Kate Middleton and Conan O’Brien.” Well don’t giggle too soon, with Liz’s past not so long ago, the days of bathroom up-do’s for girlfriends heading off to prom and perfecting parents perms, we see these two “dream clients” sitting in Liz Jung’s chair in the not so distant future.
